Due to limitations related to COVID-19, only 90 students per ensemble were selected for each SCMEA divisional music festival this year. The West Babylon student-musicians will join the ranks of the countyРІР‚в„ўs finest orchestra, chorus and band musicians for rehearsals and performances during two weekends in March.Р”В®ach year, thousands of students are nominated for SCMEA All-County. Students are nominated by their music teachers and chosen by a SCMEA selection committee based on their outstanding performance in school music programs, as well as in local NYSSMA solo festivals. 29.Р”В®ighteen student-musicians from the West Babylon School District were chosen to perform at the Suffolk County Music EducatorsРІР‚в„ў Association All-County honors ensembles. The West Babylon teams are now prepping for the annual Eastern Suffolk County Regional Competition on Jan. Though they did not medal in this particular tournament, it was exciting to compete with more than 4,000 students from around the U.S. West Babylon competed against 272 teams from across the country. More recently, Teams A and B participated in the National Science Olympiad Virtual Invitational, hosted by Caltech and Southern California Science Olympiad on Jan. Sophomore Kenneth Miller and freshman William Horowitz received bronze (10th place) in cell biology and seniors Camilo Brown-Pinilla and Michael Alexiadis received bronze (third place) in WIFI Lab. This tournament had Team A against 72 teams from throughout the country. Their first competition was the Dick Smith virtual competition hosted by PA Science Olympiad on Dec. In preparation for the upcoming annual regional competition, Senior High School Science Olympiad teams have been competing virtually against teams nationwide. They are ready when they leave the high school to assume these roles and successfully further their studies and work. Our students develop their leadership skills in the classroom, in their clubs and organizations and on the athletic fields. Groups such as our GSA and LEO clubs lead the school in activities that teach acceptance, compassion, empathy and service to others. and add to the total development of our students. Our co curricular activities, including our athletic teams, mirror this focus. Our Social, Emotional and Academic Learning program, entering its sixth year, parallels the Dignity for All Students Act, and is the foundation for creating a safe learning environment in which our students can learn and develop the emotional competencies that lead to success in the 21st century world for which they are being prepared.
